Cold Laser Therapy at Wedington Animal Hospital

If your beloved animal companion is in pain, such as from nerve damage, arthritis or an injury, you’ll want to do whatever it takes to bring relief. Pet owners who prefer a non-surgical and pain-free approach toward treating their dog or cat without the use of drugs often find themselves turning to cold laser therapy, a novel service that we are proud to offer at Wedington Animal Hospital.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold laser therapy is a fairly recent innovation, so you may not know very much about it or how it works to bring relief to pets. A trained veterinarian uses cold laser therapy to aim a laser beam at areas of the animal’s body that need pain relief and healing. This kind of laser beam is safe to use on pets.

Generally, we will ask you to be with your pet during the procedure, which requires you and the vet to wear protective goggles to shield your eyes from the cold laser beam.

A vet holds the laser against the surface of your dog or cat’s skin (if the skin itself is tender, the vet can position the laser just above it, without touching.)

Cold laser therapy is designed to speed up the recovery process and healing. Vets use it to reduce inflammation in pets, as well as to help eliminate acute or chronic pain. A chemical reaction known as photobiostimulation occurs as the cold laser light penetrates through the skin. Photobiostimulation can drastically cut down on pain in pets as it prompts injured cells in the affected area to begin healing faster than they would without any veterinarian intervention.

The laser therapy also serves to cut down on swelling and inflammation while increasing blood circulation. What’s more, treatment from a cold laser can actually cause your pet to release endorphins, which provide a natural form of pain relief.

You may see this treatment referred to as cold laser therapy, class IV laser therapy or low-level laser, and they all mean the same thing.

Expect that the veterinarian will typically require anywhere from 3 minutes to 8 minutes to provide cold laser treatment. You may see improvement after the first treatment, but the vet will not know until then how many follow-up visits may be needed. The vet will set up a customized treatment plan just for your cat or dog.
